My name is Violaine, a licensed tour guide and lecturer, originally from the beautiful region of Normandy. I recently had the pleasure of introducing visitors to one of the most remarkable castles in the Seine Valley: La Roche-Guyon Castle.
Nestled in a bend of the River Seine, between the landscapes of the French Vexin and the gateway to Normandy, this exceptional site offers a fascinating journey through nearly a thousand years of history. Built against a spectacular chalk cliff, the castle combines a medieval fortress, an elegant 18th-century residence, and remains from the Second World War.
During the visit, we explored the state rooms, learned about the noble families who shaped the estate, discovered the famous keep connected to the castle by a staircase carved into the rock, and enjoyed breathtaking views over the Seine Valley. The castle also reflects the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment, when the La Rochefoucauld family welcomed philosophers, scientists, and leading intellectuals of their time.
More recent history is also present here. In 1944, the castle served as the headquarters of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel during the preparation of Germany’s defense against the Allied landings. This period left visible traces that can still be seen in the cliffside tunnels and underground passages.
Beyond its rich heritage, La Roche-Guyon captivates visitors with its preserved natural setting, beautiful gardens, and the unique atmosphere of a village considered one of the most charming destinations in the Paris region.
A captivating visit that appeals equally to history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and anyone who appreciates the stunning landscapes of the Seine Valley.
